St. Mary’s Parish Church has a group of people who act as servers at church services. There are usually two servers at the main Eucharist at 10.15am on Sunday. The duties of a server are to assist in the preparation of the altar, to light the candles in the sanctuary and to carry torches whilst leading the procession of choir and clergy. A rota system is in place, with the usual requirement being attendance on one Sunday per month, though there may be additional opportunities to serve at the major church festivals, such as Easter and Christmas.
Adults who are interested in joining the team would be very welcome and full training is given. An alb (a white robe) is provided. Young people are especially encouraged to become servers, as it is an opportunity to take on a role within the church. It fosters a sense of responsibility and it is a great way to make new friends.
Becoming a server is special: it enhances worship and increases understanding of the liturgy. It also provides times of fellowship as we try to solve the Vicar’s quiz each New Year!
