Youth Choir

St Mary’s Youth Choir has been running since November 2012 and is thriving. It is made up of young people, aged 8-18. They sing at the 10.15 service at St. Mary’s on the first, third and fifth Sundays of the month, with more experienced members singing at Choral Evensong.  In addition to regular services, they take part in festival services and also often sing for weddings and other special events. They have taken part in Carmina Burana with the Wotton Concert Series, have sung at Bristol and Hereford Cathedrals and also put on at least one concert of their own a year. We encourage an interest in a variety of music and the Youth Choir’s repertoire truly stretches from ancient to modern; they have sung everything from plainchant to gospel, from traditional anthems in Latin to ‘The Heavenly Aeroplane’!

The Youth Choir are trained by three experienced musicians: Sarah Richardson, George Richardson and Hilary Varlow. The current members are working towards their first awards through the RCSM; for this they are developing their singing technique, sight reading, musical knowledge and knowledge of the church services. We hope to continue to progress through these awards. They are equivalent to music ‘grades’ and even carry some weight for UCAS forms and CVs!

We are always looking for new members and do not have a formal audition process. All you need to join us is an interest in music and a willingness to join in with worship. You do not need to be able to read music (we will teach you!) but you will need to be a confident reader. Please join us from 6.00-7.30pm one Friday night and have a go!
